Almeria & surroundings

In For a Few Dollars more some sequences of the escape of the Indio from the prison take place inside the Plaza de Toros of Almeria; in 2016 we arrived on site on the day of the bullfights; in the morning the entrance to the Bullring was free, so we entered, visited it and took some photos.

On some web sites it is stated that the one in the following photo is the stair seen in the film; indeed, having turned the interior of the building far and wide, this is the most similar, but from I’m really not so sure that this is true; in any case here it is.

In Duck you Sucker, Mesa Verde is the city where the bank that Juan wants to rob, the dream of his life, is located.

The scenes taking place in Mesa Verde are quite complex: in fact they are shot in Almeria, Guadix and Medinaceli, sometimes they are put together in the same scene even if these places are hundreds of kilometers far.

Juan and his family’s arrival at Mesa Verde was filmed at the old Almeria railway station. Today, next to the old station, a new one has been built and the old one has been abandoned; the old building is very beautiful but unfortunately it is closed to the public. We asked the stationmaster if it was possible to enter for a few minutes but we were not allowed; the stationmaster, however, was very proud of our interest in the historic station.

The interior of the station is filmed at Burana Mollygroup, an elegant bar in Paseo de Almeria, 56. The first time we were there It was closed and we had time to take just one photo. We passed there many times and the bar was always locked. But, in 2023, we found the bar under renovation and we took some more pictures. These are the results:

Just for the record, I’d like to point out that a few years ago, in Almeria, a street was dedicated to Sergio Leone. It is located in an absolutely anonymous neighborhood, not far from the station. Better than nothing…:

In the opening scene of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the Bad arrives at Steven’s farm to find information about the loot of a bank robbery. The exteriors are filmed at the Campillo de Dona Francisca; here the interior scenes take place.

The Cortijo de la Hoya Altica is located on the road between Cabo de Gata and Almeria, just before Retamar, reached by a short dirt road on the left of the road.
